ON reading Jennifer Oriel's commentary on the furore within the Human Rights Commission on the appointment of Tim Wilson, it becomes clear any appointment by the present government will rub salt into the wounds of the Left ("Left fights a rearguard action against liberty", 26/12). The fact that it was Wilson merely means that there was a little extra salt.
The fact that it was Wilson merely means there was a little extra salt.
For six years, the previous Labor government had made appointments to various bodies over which it had control. I have no doubt that this government will make other appointments that will cause angst among leftists. So be it.
Few will doubt that the human right of free speech is one which must be preserved, notwithstanding the historical opposition by the Left, but it does seem that this is really a case of fat cats protecting their patch.
