It's hard to come up with one word. A diamond in the rough is a person who seems as mediocre as the rest of a group at first but eventually stands out as being exceptional. If you can think of one word to sum that up, more power to you.

Edit: Underrated, under-appreciated. Underrated would probably be best.

Alright. I need a term, more or less, instead of just one word. If you could think of term too, that would be great. lol

thank you.

  • Usually means "rough around the edges"

  • I don't know if it's not seeing somebody's full potential. That could be a long-term ignorance or simply short-sightedness.

I think of it more as a prejudicial low expectation of things or people in a particular environment and coming upon an exception and actually seeing its or his or her higher potential in spite of the environment. This would, hopefully, remove the prejudice.

But that's a paragraph. Not a word. Two words? Exceeding expectations? Maybe three? Greatly exceeding expectations? Perhaps "serendipitous"? Although I don't know if that has an exclusively positive meaning.
