Military link quizzed

CLAIMS by a Sydney University academic that sanctions against an Israeli university were justified because of its links to the military ignore the fact that his own institution conducts research for the Australian defence forces and other military organisations.
Jake Lynch, head of the Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Sydney, last year refused to sponsor an academic from the Hebrew University because it had links to the Israeli military.
But Sydney is one of 13 Australian universities that receive funding from the Defence Science and Technology Organisation. A spokeswoman confirmed Sydney also received money from other military organisations. The University of NSW, which has also been the site of boycott, divestment and sanctions campaigns against the Max Brenner chocolate shop chain, provides undergraduate and postgraduate courses and teachers for 1000 defence force students enrolled at its campus in Canberra.
Merlin Crossley, dean of science at the University of NSW, said the relationship between the military and publicly funded research went back decades and was a widespread practice around the world.
Military research was either classified -- conducted in government research facilities usually by government-appointed scientists -- or unclassified, and open to university researchers and industry partners.
