 Politics - federal
The only witnesses to the wall-punching incident of 35 years ago - if a non-event can have any -deny the bizarre claims against Tony Abbott now peddled so recklessly by muckracker David Marr.
In 1977, Abbott and I drove down from Sydney to Melbourne to attend an (Australian Union of Students) conference at Monash University… The stench of marijuana lay heavy in the air, and every communist and Trotskyist sub-group had assembled, it seemed, its entire national membership…
No doubt the silliest thing we did at the conference was to attend a Palestinian film night (and) heckled the film a bit.

Although we were out-numbered at least 10 to one, and new reinforcements from other hard-left groups soon turned up, the film was stopped and we were told we had to leave...One woman from the far Left came up behind Abbott, took off her wooden clog and whacked him hard over the back of the head.

I’ll never forget Abbott’s response. He turned round, paused and said: “Madame, if you were not a lady, I’d be tempted to strike you back.” Then we left.

This incident came back to my mind as I read the scabrous propaganda of David Marr in his Quarterly Essay, “Political Animal, the making of Tony Abbott”.

Marr claims that in 1977, when Abbott was defeated for the presidency of the Student Representative Council by Barbara Ramjan, he went up to her, came within an inch of her nose and punched both sides of the wall beside her as an act of intimidation.

Marr records Abbott’s denial of this but says he, Marr, believes the incident took place as described by Ramjan. Marr is wrong. And this mistake reflects his overall sloppiness as a journalist, failure as a historian and distorting bias as a polemicist.

Yesterday I spoke to Jeremy Jones, who was elected to the SRC on the same night Abbott lost that election to Ramjan.

Jones was a member of the Labor Party and led a Labor ticket in student elections… He knew every accusation that each side made against the other. He is certain he would have heard of any such alleged incident by Abbott and he is also certain he never heard any such allegation made. In other words, he is certain it didn’t happen…
Abbott was my best friend at that time. We talked over everything… I remember the night in question quite well. No such incident was ever discussed by Abbott or by anyone else in his circle. It is utterly inconceivable.

Marr could have found this out if he were a competent historian.

But Marr is instead what he accuses Abbott of being, an undergraduate pamphleteer desperately seeking to distort any bit of so-called evidence he can find to support a pre-existing narrative he has all mapped out.
But such are the shameful tactics of Labor that, aided by allies such as Marr, it stoops to using a highly dubious and unverified claim from 35 years ago to smear a moral man today:
In the partyroom, Wayne (Swan) told the troops Abbott’s carbon tax scare campaign had “hit a brick wall ... What is it about Abbott and brick walls?”
And in Parliament:
‘He wants to go the biff all the time!’’ Swan then said… ”He is a thug.”
This, from the party which on Australia Day incited a mini race riot to make Abbott seem a race-baiter. You know, Abbott, the guy who spends some of his holidays each year helping to rebuild Aboriginal communities.
Has Labor no shame?
UPDATE
Who were the real thugs and bullies back in Tony Abbott’s student days? From Abbott on March 27, 1979: A Day in The Life of the SRC President
I arrive at the SRC to be immediately confronted by a garbage can on its side and papers scattered all along the SRC corridor. However, this does not seem as dirty as one might think, as the walls themselves have been covered in obscenities.A clean floor would seem almost incongruous. I notice that the front office wall has been decorated with homosexual posters by one of the front office staff who stares sullenly and uncooperatively, especially when I take them down and ask him not to replace them with others of a partisan politico, socio, sexual bent.He complains to the Hon. Sec./Treasurer, the Honi editors and anyone else who will listen. I walk down the corridor to my ‘office’.It is finally time, I decide, to remove the condom which has been pinned on my door. It rather clashes with the lesbian posters that have been plastered there.A notice I had placed on the door reads “Tony (confidentially) you are a f***wit”.It has now been slashed for good measure.
(Thanks to readers marg, Michelle and Jeff.)
UPDATE
Jeremy Jones, who was elected to represent male students from the faculty of arts on the Sydney University SRC at the time Ms Ramjan was elected president of the SRC, told The Australian he was convinced the incident didn’t happen. “We were extremely sensitive to these sort of issues. If something like this had happened it would have been widely discussed,” he said.

It appears Marr has zero documentation to back this rubbish. On the other hand, there appears to be an ever increasing amount concerning the AWU and the association of this with We Know Who! Swan needs to back off on this “wrong horse”.
Just let yourself imagine what happens to a hand if it is punched into a wall. It will hurt like hell and you can very easily break the bones in your hands. A boxer in training wouldn’t even consider risking injury to a fist that is generally well padded in a correct tight fitting glove.
This wall punching rubbish only happens in movies and possibly in these minds intending to cause mischief.

Exactly. The labor strategists probably thought that they wouldn’t get away with claiming that Abbott actually punched a woman in the head! (lack of hospital records etc.) but punching a wall, well, seems innocuous enough BUT! hey! won’t this show what a violent woman hater he is ? I can just picture them all high-fiveing each other for a brilliant idea! (not). Are they the same dills who crafted the Australia Day riot that turned into a Labor fiasco? -saved only by the union heavies in Canberra and the much leant-on Federal police.
It’s pure desperation. The left know that the ALP are going to lose the election, they can see the Greens are slipping in support as people wake up to them. As such they are reduced to the most primitive attack the man strategies.
As many pointed out before, it didn’t work against Campell Newman and it won’t work now.
Marr should be ashamed of himself.

All good except for two things: Except for the literal wall punch, Abbott has acted in exactly the same way over Julia’s win over him.
And the second thing is that we know he was a puncher. Well, Hockey knows that he was a puncher back in those days.
So he has form.
As for the attack on Marr - why go the messenger? Should we go you for your treatment of Gillard over AWU. You have no evidence, nor does the press, nothing to throw at her. She has made herself available to answer each and every questions, despite the issue having been sifted through for 15 years or so.

So there is absolutely no evidence that Abbott did anything wrong, but we should worry about him being angry because, well, we just should! Desperation really is a bad smell, you know that right?
Gillard had a clear connection with the AWU scandal, she may not have been guilty of anything but at the time she was connected with someone who was. There is clear and undeniable evidence of this. This attack on Abbott is pure smear and nothing but fabricated nonsense based on the word of someone who didn’t even mention it 35 years ago.
This issue exposes the childishness of the left (as if we didn’t already know how childish you were). Basically, Gillard has had all these accusations against her, so Marr has gone out and said “yeah well, look what I got on Abbott!” He made the accusations without doing any research at all and has shown himself to be nothing but an ALP barracker.

PM Gillard ambushed the media on the AWU issue as the journalists who knew the details of the allegations were not at the “briefing”...remembering of course the press conference asw initially called about asylum seeker policy as Immigration Minister Bowen was there...also she has never made a statement to parliament where she is bound to tell the whole truth...there are severe penalties for misleading parliament.

Abbott has nothing to answer to here… To be quite honest, a delving into the year 1977 would probably show more illegal activities re drug offences on the Labor side of politics than you could point a stick at..... and if you had read and comprehended what was written above, you would have noticed that two people who knew him well said it didn’t happen, nor would Abbott have acted in such a manner.
As for evidence of Gillard’s malfeasance. There are some quite damning documents with her handwriting on them and the setting up improperly of an association that was later used to defraud the Union and workplaces.... In her own words she knew it wasn’t a Work Safety association but rather a “slush fund”. From her own mouth, in her own words.
Be an adult BT and hold your political representatives to task when confronted with such evidence.... If Tony Abbott had done what Julia Gillard has done, nothing on this Earth would get me to vote for him or support him.

Based on the evidence available, there is enough evidence to charge Julia Gillard for concealing a serious indictable offence which carries a jail term of 2 years under section 316 of the Crimes Act 1900 (Vict).
What Abbott is alleged to have done, and there were no witnesses, pales into insignificance. Its a non-event based on anecdotal evidence.

This raises an important point about the intolerance and aggressiveness of the far left, especially in a University environment. I remember my days at La Trobe University and the Australian flag burning ratbags there.
It’s not hard to imagine whatever story is true about Tony Abbott, you can be garanteed in a university environment, ANYONE of conservative persuasion is certainly on the outer and treated with a great deal of hostility. It’s not hard to imagine one being provoked to a point where they strike back.
I recall in 1993 at La Trobe. I was sitting in the Agora sqaure (the main gathering place for students to eat lunch) I was having lunch on a step and I accidentally knocked over my empty bottle of mineral water that was at my feet (it didn’t break mind you). Straight away, some self righteous hippie dressed like a scarecrow with a tea cosy on his head sitting opposite calls out to me ‘oh, what a wanker’. I walked up to him, flicked off his hat and reminded him, that it was an accident, not to jump to conclusions or call me that again.
I guess someone like Marr would say I was the bad guy..when infact I was minding my own business, had a little accident and was provoked by some self righteous prat.

I bet the same man today is a respectable fat dentist with a wife, six kids and a mortgage and wailing about Wayne Swan wasting his hard earned taxes.
Life is a little like that.

Apart from the age discrepancy it is more likely that that man is Wayne Swan! LOL
In answer to your last question, it appears not. cool mad

Good thing this alleged incident didn’t happen in China otherwise the great wall of CHINA would have fallen by the punch of that professional BOXER ,TAbbott. ( a sort of Boxer Rebellion !!! )
This would have set back out relationship with China for years ( 35 ?), and would understandably not be reported by the likes of D Marr or his leftist cohorts.
I wonder if D Marr has ever been to China or does he get his information from Travel brochures or second hand.

“Has Labor no shame?”
None whatsoever.
But then, that’s the Left in general.
Ammoral and pathologically misanthropic (in lurrrrrve with humanity, but just dang hate the nasty humans).

Thompson, Lindsay scandal, AWU/Gillard, Slipper, Ute gate etc.
Your party has no shame when it comes to smear campaigns.
Hypocrisy is truly sickening.
No, Andrew, labor has no shame.
But the good news is that after the next Federal election it will also have no seats.
