  • Fox Regular Michael Scheuer: "Democrats Are Very Good At Watching Americans Die"

  • Fox's Failures In Covering The Iran Debate

    BLOG ››› MARCH 19, 2012 7:03 PM EDT ››› MIKE BURNS
Writing in Foreign Policy, Harvard University international affairs professor Stephen M. Walt listed his "Top Ten Media Failures in the 2012 Iran War Scare" and provides examples of media outlets that he believes are responsible for those failures. One other media outlet that quickly comes to mind as an example of extremely poor Iran coverage is Fox News.
For some time now, Fox's coverage of the Iran debate has left much to be desired, and indeed, Fox has committed many of the "top ten media failures" that Walt identified.
"#1 Mainstreaming the war." Walt wrote that media outlets repeatedly push the idea that "war is imminent, likely, inevitable, etc.," which could potentially "convince the public that it is going to happen sooner or later and it discourages people from looking for better alternatives." Fox has done this repeatedly. For example, Fox military analyst Jack Keane said on Happening Now: "I think it's inevitable" that the United States will have "some kind of conflict" with Iran. Regular Fox guest and former CIA official Michael Scheuer has likewise saidthat the U.S. is "going to war against the Iranians," and Fox News host Sean Hannity has even said that he thinks war with Iran "has already started."
"#2: Loose talk about Iran's 'nuclear [weapons] program.' " Walt stated that a "recurring feature of Iran war coverage has been tendency to refer to Iran's 'nuclear weapons program' as if its existence were an established fact." Fox has done this too. During an appearance on America's Newsroom, Fox News national security analyst KT McFarland distorted comments by Secretary of Defense and former CIA director Leon Panetta toclaim that "Iran will have a nuclear weapon in a year or sooner," co-host Martha MacCallum failed to point out that there are significant questions about whether Iran is planning to build nuclear weapons at all.
Indeed, 2007 and 2011 National Intelligence Estimates found no conclusive evidence that Iran is even trying to build a bomb. And in January 31 testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper reiterated the fact that the U.S. intelligence committee does not have evidence to say that Iran is trying to build a bomb.

Led by Fox's Andrew Napolitano, right-wing media figures have embraced yet another conspiracy theory aimed at attacking President Obama: that Osama bin Laden might not be dead. Right-wing media have previously promoted the false conspiracy theory that Obama was not born in United States and the myth that Obama is a Muslim.

  • Is Fox Regular Michael Scheuer Arguing That Armed Revolution May Be Necessary In The U.S.?

    BLOG ››› APRIL 1, 2011 12:49 AM EDT ››› ADAM SHAH
On Fox Business' Freedom Watch, host Andrew Napolitano hosted Fox regular and former CIA official Michael Scheuer to discuss President Obama's actions in Libya. Out of nowhere, Scheuer began ranting about taxes and spending and said: "It really points to the wisdom of the Founders in putting the Second Amendment into place as a guard against arbitrary, ridiculous government."
That's a dangerous mix of right-wing talking points. Scheuer managed (again, with no prompting whatsoever) to go off on a "tax-and-spend" rant against a Democratic administration and then immediately bring up the Second Amendment right to bear arms. It's hard to interpret Scheuer's comments as anything other than an argument that people may need to arm themselves to overthrow the Obama administration if things continue down this road.
    Watch:
NAPOLITANO: Can you look at this and say, "There they go again. The government of the United States thinks that it can instill a western Jeffersonian democracy in a part of the planet that has never come anywhere close to ideas like that and they think they can instill it with force and they think they can instill with it American bloodshed"?
SCHEUER: Yeah, that's exactly what's going on, Judge. The president's running out of time here. The resistance is going to get beat without boots on the ground. You know, they involved us in unnecessary wars. They tax us to death. They spend us into oblivion. It really points to the wisdom of the Founders in putting the Second Amendment into place as a guard against arbitrary, ridiculous government.
And keep in mind that Scheuer once stated that "[t]he only chance we have as a country right now is for Osama bin Laden to deploy and detonate a major weapon in the United States." Scheuer has also said that "we're not killing enough people" in Afghanistan and that Democratic administrations are "pro-terrorist." He has also launched numerous personal attacks on President Obama, stating that Obama "obviously does not care" about "protecting Americans" and calling him a "coward." And Scheuer has said that Obama's "arrogance and racism" will get "more of our kids killed in wars."

  • Wash. Post Turns To Michael Scheuer For Analysis Of Mideast Uprisings

    BLOG ››› MARCH 7, 2011 11:57 AM EST ››› ERIC SCHROECK
For commentary on the recent uprisings in the Middle East, The Washington Post recently turned to former CIA official Michael Scheuer, publishing an op-ed by Scheuer headlined, "Why the Mideast revolts will help al-Qaeda."
Why the Post thought it would be a good idea to give him such a platform -- which also includes a Web chat this morning -- is a mystery. As Media Matters has noted, Scheuer has a long history of extreme rhetoric, oncestating that "[t]he only chance we have as a country right now is for Osama bin Laden to deploy and detonate a major weapon in the United States."
Scheuer, a Fox News regular, has also said that "we're not killing enough people in Afghanistan" and that Democratic administrations are "pro-terrorist." He has also launched numerous personal attacks on President Obama, stating that Obama "obviously does not care" about "protecting Americans" and calling him a "coward."
Despite this, the Post still gave Scheuer a prominent platform to discuss the recent events in the Middle East. At this point, what would Scheuer need to say for the Post to decide he's not a credible analyst?
