The Honourable Bob Carr
Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs
Bob Carr was formerly a member of the US Studies Centre Board of Directors. He was a speaker at the 2011 National Summit.
Bob Carr is the longest continuously serving Premier in New South Wales history. Born in 1947 he was educated at Matraville High School and the University of New South Wales.
He was a journalist with ABC Radio and The Bulletin.
Elected as Member for Maroubra in 1983, he was Minister for Planning and Environment and Minister for Heritage in the Wran and Unsworth Governments.
He served as Leader of the Opposition from 1988 until his election as Premier in March 1995. He was re-elected in 1999 and again in March 2003 securing an historic third four-year term.
He retired from politics in 2005 after over 10 years as Premier.
During these 10 years the State Government set new records for spending on infrastructure, became the first government in the State's history to retire debt, hosted the world's best Olympics in 2000, achieved the nation's best school literacy levels, and Forbes magazine called Bob Carr a "dragon slayer" for his landmark tort law reforms.
As Premier he introduced the world's first carbon trading scheme and curbed the clearing of native vegetation as anti-greenhouse measures. Today he chairs the Advisory Council of the Climate Institute. He was a member of the International Task Force on Climate Change convened by Tony Blair.
He is also Chair of the Board of the Asbestos Diseases Research Foundation; a member of the Board of the Dymocks Group of Companies, a member of the advisory board of the Centre for Australian Studies at Georgetown University, Washington and a member of the India Council for Sustainable Development.
Bob Carr has received the Fulbright Distinguished Fellow Award Scholarship and the World Conservation Union International Parks Merit Award. He has served as Honorary Scholar of the Australian American Leadership Dialogue. He is the author of Thoughtlines (2002), What Australia Means to Me (2003), and My Reading Life (2008).

Mark W. Geiger is a postdoctoral fellow at the US Studies Centre. Financial Fraud and Guerrilla Violence in Missouri's Civil War, 1861-1865 is his first book. His dissertation, on which the book is based, received Columbia University's Nevins Prize, awarded by the Economic History Association.

We all have our favourite and least favourite US presidents. But do we know why? And how do we judge? This day-long conference featured Dr Ian J. Bickerton of the University of New South Wales,Dr Jeremy Pressman of the US Studies Centre and The Honourable Bob Carr. The panel explored the lives and careers of a number of those who occupied the White House in an attempt to systematically assess who were the greatest and who were less great.

The Centre launched the first phase of US-China relations – and what's in store for Australia, a new research, outreach, and publication project. Visiting professor Linda Jakobson, the project's principal investigator, hosted 15 specialists at a one-day workshop on US-China relations as part of the launch. Workshop participants included former Australian foreign minister and former Centre board member Bob Carr, Professor Chu Shulong of Tsinghua University in Beijing, Professor Hugh White and Professor William Tow of the Australian National University, as well as Gordon Flake, CEO of the Perth USAsia Centre. Over lunch, Centre CEO Bates Gill moderated a discussion with the president of the Council on Foreign Relations, Richard Haass.

Former NSW premier and Centre board director, Bob Carr, spoke to the gathering about the US presidency – including his recent reassessment of John Kennedy having listened to his 1963 ‘peace speech’ urging an end to the Cold War. The night at Sydney’s MLC Centre was intended to provide information and enable prospective students and their families to speak to academic, administrative staff, and former students, about the US Studies Centre’s postgraduate course offerings. Dean Fernandez, graduate, Master of Letters in US Studies and Lauren Haumesser also presented on this fun-filled evening.
2011 National Summit: The 9/11 Decade - Breakout Sessions Day 1

The "9/11 Decade: How Everything Changed" summit brought together government decision-makers past and present, thought leaders and academic experts from the US, Australia and around the world to take stock of the first epoch of the new millennium, the 9/11 Decade. The breakout sessions on day 1 of the conference featured Nicholas Burns, Anatol Lieven, Hugh White, Leah Farrall and Bill Paterson.

US Studies Centre postdoctoral fellow Mark W. Geiger's first book is Financial Fraud and Guerrilla Violence in Missouri's Civil War, 1861-1865. The book was launched at an event at the University of Sydney hosted by former NSW premier and current member of the Centre's Board of Directors Bob Carr. Race in America, race in Australia: A public forum featuring Glenn Loury, Waleed Aly and Bob Carr

The election in 2008 of Barack Obama as the first African-American President of the United States and Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s apology to the stolen generations were watersheds in the history of race relations in both countries. But political and policy tensions continue to surround African-Americans and indigenous Australians in both countries and race relations in Australia and the US span broader issues in both societies including multiculturalism, immigration, security and inequality.
Glenn Loury, one of the US’s most influential African-American public intellectuals and a distinguished economist on race and inequality, and Waleed Aly, one of Australia’s most sought after voices on multiculturalism, spoke to former NSW Premier Bob Carr about these issues at this event.
US Business Leadership Forum with Rupert Murdoch

Rupert Murdoch, Chairman and CEO of News Corporation, discussed a range of global issues ranging from the global economic crisis to US-China relations and the future of the media with a group of Australian leaders from politics, business, academia and the media at a luncheon on 3 November in Sydney co-hosted by the US Studies Centre and Goldman Sachs JB Were.
Other guests at the lunch included former Prime Ministers Bob Hawke and John Howard, who are also members of the Centre's Advisory Council, Premier of New South Wales Nathan Rees, Governor of NSW and Chancellor of the University of Sydney Marie Bashir, Chairman of Westfield Group Frank Lowy, NAB CEO Cameron Clyne, IAG ChairmanJames Strong, University of Sydney Vice Chancellor Michael Spence, and Directors of the US Studies Centre, Bob Carr, Zeke Solomon, Joe Skrzynski and Lucy Turnbull.
